I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: And if I send them away fasting [hungry WU] to their own houses, they will faint by [on] the way: for divers [some] of them came from far. And the scribes [experts in the law WU] and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken [caught WU] in adultery; and when they had set her in the[ir WU] midst, they say unto him, Master [Teacher], this woman was taken [caught WU] in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such [women WU] should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting [to trap WU] him, that they might have [reason WU] to accuse him. Woe unto you, scribes [experts in the law WU] and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of [a tenth of your WU] mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain at [out] a gnat, and swallow a camel. Mat 23:23-24

But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have [desire] mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. Mat 12:1-14 Legalism and extremism work against mercy and compassion.
